Welcome to 2021…

Let’s be honest…After insurrectionists stormed the Capitol and attempted to overthrow the United States government last week, it’s fair to say that the New Year got off to a rough start for many of us (understatement of the year?).

As we continue to process the disturbing events of last week, we’re reflecting on how much power each of us wields as leaders. Whether you’re on the job, at home or in your community, the people you lead are watching you. What you say, what you do and how you show up in challenging situations influences the people around you. Are you fully aware of the impact you have on the people you lead? 

To expand your positive impact on the people you lead, spend some time thinking about the leader you want to be this year. 

Reflect on and write down your answers to these questions:

  • What example will you set? With a heightened awareness of the influence you have on the people you lead, what shifts will you make in your words, your actions and how you show up in challenging situations?
  • What difference will you make? Think about the people and causes that matter most to you. Who and what will you stand for? Who and what are you willing to take great risks for? Fast forward to December 31, 2021, and envision the difference you’ve made to them. Get specific. Why does this matter to you? What has changed? What will it feel like when this happens?
  • How can you bring more of YOU to work? Too often, people fall into the trap of believing that success requires them to wear a mask to fit someone else’s definition of leadership. What could be possible if you took off your mask this year? Write down the natural leadership gifts you already have (If you need some help with this, what are 5 words you use to describe yourself?). Consider how you, your team and your organization could benefit when you lean into these natural strengths.
  • How will you make people feel? In the wise words of Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” At its core, business is just humans helping other humans. How will you use your leadership to bring more humanity to business?

Congratulations, you now have a vision for your leadership in 2021! Post your vision where you will see it every day. Let it inspire you. When you have a clear vision of who you want to be and the difference you want to make through your leadership, it will be easier to align your daily actions, commitments and decisions with your vision.  

Now, go forth and create your own Dimension of Possible this year…and don’t forget to have some fun while you’re doing it!!
